Our story begins in 1975 when our founder, Carmen Mathews, decided to share her glorious property with children from the inner city.
“I’ve been given so much, been successful in my vocation and have had a happy life, I wanted to serve youngsters who might never have this kind of opportunity. I had a growing realization that the use of my lovely farm must evolve. I felt I had to use its advantages to help the disadvantaged. I had this exquisite terrain all around me and I wanted it to be used in the most wonderful way possible.” Carmen Mathews
Carmen and her friends converted the spacious turkey coop on the hill into the first bunkhouse. They brought in electricity to power a few lightbulbs, they hung up curtains and brought in cots, the cold water was supplied from a single hose running from a spigot, and the small supply of warm water came from the black hoses that two counselors criss-crossed along the roof to gather warming rays from the sun. From these humble beginnings our summer camp program has evolved into a well respected and well loved tradition.
Now housed in our beautiful 7,000 square foot Learning Center, our State-licensed camp develops an understanding and appreciation of one another as individuals, and have a marvelous time discovering the many wonders of the farm. Days are filled to the brim with activities like woodlands and wetland explorations, arts and crafts, swimming, gardening, working with our farmers, and having good old fashioned “unplugged” fun. They leave us with a strong sense of accomplishment, walking a little taller and always filled with positive memories.
