Summer Institute's Upper School Program offers high school students (Grades 9-12) the opportunity to explore new subjects, or to advance in core academic or artistic subjects. Students who are serious about their academic and personal growth will find our intensive college preparatory courses, situated in a relaxed environment, the perfect way to excel this summer.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

  • Six Week Session: June 25 - August 3. 2018

This course is a traditional first-year study of elementary algebraic concepts and their applications. Topics covered include linear equations and inequalities, system of equations, graphing, direct variation, operations with rational and irrational expressions, radical equations, the quadratic formula, quadratic functions and equations, and factoring. This course provides a foundation for Algebra 2.

Teachers and TA's are available from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. for homework help or for a review session.


Algebra 2 / Trigonometry

Algebra 2 / Trigonometry

  • Six Week Session: June 25 - August 3, 2018
  • Time: 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
  • Incoming Grades: 10, 11, 12
  • Year Long Course: 1 Credit
  • Cost: $1,780

This course is a continuation and extension of Algebra 1. Topics cover several functions, such as absolute value, linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, rational, radical, and trigonometric equations. The course includes topics on rational exponents, complex numbers, sequences and series, inequalities, and systems of linear equations in two and three variables. The TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is used throughout the course.

Geometry

Geometry

  • Six Week Session: June 25 - August 3, 2018

Geometry is a six-week four-hour course covered in the standard sequence of college preparatory mathematics at King. This course is designed for students with a strong mathematics interest and background. The course emphasizes logic, reasoning, inductive and deductive thinking skills; it includes the study of the properties and applications of common geometric figures in two and three dimensions, transformations, and right triangle trigonometry.Geometer Sketchpad and traditional compass and straightedge are utilized for construction. After completing this course, students can enter Algebra II with Trigonometry.

 


Pre-Calculus

Pre-Calculus

This course is designed to prepare highly motivated and capable mathematics students for Calculus. Pre-Calculus is an extension of Algebra 2 with an emphasis on functions, trigonometry, and introductory calculus topics. All major areas covered in Algebra 2 are reinforced at a greater depth with additional calculator applications. Students must have their own TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator.

Physics

Physics

General Physics is an algebra-based physics course; it covers Newtonian mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, waves and optics, and modern physics. Students gain both a deeper appreciation of the concepts of Physics and additional problem-solving skills. Hands-on or computer based labs help students understand the concepts covered in the course and deepen the students' appreciation of the scientific method.

On some days, class could go to 12 p.m. due to a lab or extra time. Teachers and TA's are available from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. for homework help or for a review session.

This course emphasizes fundamental Algebra skills necessary to be successful in Algebra I. Topics reviewed include solving multiple step equations and relating two or more unknowns, multiplying binomials, graphing linear equations and a variety of word problems. This course would be helpful for any student who needs to improve their Algebra skills.

This course would be helpful for any student who needs to improve their Algebra skills or whose Algebra course did not cover the above topics.


Trigonometry

This course will begin with an introduction to Trigonometry. Throughout the course, students will cover all of the Trigonometry topics included in an Algebra 2/Trigonometry course. These topics include right triangle trigonometry, trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, the unit circle, periodic functions, and graphing trigonometric functions. This course provides a foundation for Precalculus and would be helpful for any student whose Algebra 2 course did not include Trigonometry or all of the topics listed above.

This course introduces students to the concept of globalization as a dynamic process and condition. It explores the causes and effects of globalization and asks questions such as: What is globalization? How does globalization occur? Is globalization a new phenomenon? Is globalization driven by conflict or consensus? Does globalization create new forms of inequality and social hierarchy? This is an inquiry-based course that surveys the socioeconomic, socio-political, technological, and ecological dimensions of globalization, as well as the ideologies of globalization. Attention is also given to how globalization affects popular culture and daily life through the media and various other communication channels.

This three week long Introductory to Java Programming course, teaches students to design and program graphic and interactive applications. Students begin by using the Turtle Graphics package, a simple drawing tool, to create interesting programs while learning the fundamental concepts of data types, conditional statements, loops, methods, arrays, inheritance, object-oriented design, and polymorphism. The end result of this educational experience will conclude with a final programming project, Hangman Game. This course prepares interested students to advance to the AP Computer Science course and is the prerequisite therefore.


Topics in Global Studies

This course is meant to explore the concept of globalization as it affects specific global issues and problems. Through extensive research into these issues, students will gain a thorough understanding of the effect such issues have on the economic, political, cultural, and environmental elements of our daily lives. In the process, students will develop critical thinking skills to arrive at a consensus about how to solve the issues and problems they are studying. Learning and using research skills will be a strong component of the course.

This course is the foundation course and prerequisite for all other Visual Art electives at King, with the exception of Themes in Art History. It consists of a series of problems and projects designed to teach skills and techniques leading to the understanding and application of the elements of art and the principles of design to both two dimensional and three dimensional projects. These basic principles and elements are further enhanced by examination of the art and artists of different periods and cultures.

Yes, you can learn to speak comfortably in public! Communication skills are essential for success in academic, community and professional settings. Emphasis will include verbal and physical delivery, anxiety management strategies, developing rapport with the audience and creating a well- structured speech. Students will work in write, edit, and deliver speeches. There will be some daily homework.

English, Argumentative Writing

Are comic books literature?

This course will ask an essential question regarding all stories: what makes a story literary? We will focus specifically on comic books and media to create arguments surrounding this question.

 

The Writing Workshop for incoming Ninth Grade students will focus on essay composition from single paragraph composition to multiple paragraph outlining/writing. Students will understand the natural flow and trajectory of an essay that will lead to effective persuasive claim-based compositions. The workshop will bring attention to using higher compound sentences to express increasingly cogent argumentative pieces of writing, discussing events at a higher level in order to write more deliberate prose, and important mechanical elements. There will be heavy review of the following basic sentence structure components: punctuation, capitalization, present tense verb forms, writing without contractions, identifying parts of speech, and properly utilizing transition words. This course will cover the foundations necessary for students to understand the expectations of 9th grade composition writing.

 


3D Game Design with Unity Game Engine

In this Game Development class we introduce the Unity3D game engine - a powerful yet easy-to-learn tool used widely in the gaming industry to create fun and fantastic games! After learning how to use the engine’s interface, we begin building games using a visual scripting language to cover Computer Science concepts and Game Development basics.

Later they use Game Design theory and principles. Students will solidify their technical foundation whilst learning about level design, difficulty balance, how to design fun in a game.
