King Academic Summer Program - Middle School Program

Summer Institute's Middle School Program offers students entering Grades 6-8 the opportunity to build their core academic skills and explore new subjects that prepare them for entrance into the Upper School. At an age of many transitions, Middle School students feel more connected and invested in their learning when they discover the talents that motivate them, activities that delight them, and teachers who understand them.

Six WEEK SESSION (Earn Academic Credit)

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

  • Six Week Session: June 25 - August 3, 2018

This course is a traditional first-year study of elementary algebraic concepts and their applications. Topics covered include linear equations and inequalities, system of equations, graphing, direct variation, operations with rational and irrational expressions, radical equations, the quadratic formula, quadratic functions and equations, and factoring. This course provides a foundation for Algebra 2.

Teachers and TA's are available from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. for homework help or for a review session.

THREE WEEK SESSIONS

This introductory level course emphasizes fundamental skills necessary to be successful in algebra. Students are taught in a casual and productive environment where they learn at their own pace. Concepts are taught using several different methods in order to address the needs of a variety of learners.

This course emphasizes fundamental Algebra skills necessary to be successful in Algebra I. Topics reviewed include solving multiple step equations and relating two or more unknowns, multiplying binomials, graphing linear equations and a variety of word problems. This course would be helpful for any student who needs to improve their Algebra skills.


Introduction to Java

Introduction to Java

  • Three Week Session: June 25, 2017 - July 13, 2018
  • Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This three week long Introduction to Java Programming course, teaches students to design and program graphic and interactive applications. Students begin by using the Turtle Graphics package, a simple drawing tool, to create interesting programs while learning the fundamental concepts of data types, conditional statements, loops, methods, arrays, inheritance, object-oriented design, and polymorphism. The end result of this educational experience will conclude with a final programming project, Hangman Game. This course prepares interested students to advance to the AP Computer Science course and is the prerequisite therefore.

Students learn study skills and strategies designed to increase their comfort levels in the academic environment. They also learn to organize their school materials, take notes effectively, read and comprehend textbooks, set academic goals, determine priorities, manage time effectively, and maximize their productivity in preparing for tests. Cooperative (group) learning skills are also discussed. These study skills are adaptable to any academic setting.

Writing the Essay 101

This skills-based course aims to help middle school students develop a foundational understanding of argument writing. Over these three weeks, students will be introduced to the writing process that is currently used by the Middle School English Department at King. Students will be guided through the writing process, including: brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising. They will develop the techniques and strategies needed to write clear, well-organized paragraphs in response to short fiction and non-fiction. Students will also learn to elevate the quality and sophistication of their written work through regular reflections and teacher feedback. In addition, students will understand the importance of diction and syntax by practicing the writing of strong, varied sentences. They will work on the overall flow of their writing by evaluating the grammatical nature of their sentences.

Where do we come from? (Comparing & Contrasting Origin Stories, Myths, and Legends)

This course will utilize everything from folk tails to Greek and Roman myths to compose writing that supports individual points of view.

The Writing Workshop for incoming Seventh Grade students will focus on analysis of short texts and composition of unified sentences and paragraphs. Students will understand analytical paragraph formatting that includes creation of topic sentences in a variety of different formats (aka compound or complex sentences). The workshop will bring attention to using effective textual evidence from a non-fiction text, summarizing essential details that lead up to the said evidence (context), and important mechanical elements. There will be heavy review of the following basic sentence structure components: punctuation, capitalization, present tense verb forms, writing without contractions, identifying parts of speech, and properly utilizing transition words. This course will cover the foundations necessary for students to understand the expectations of 7th grade composition writing.

Keep It Short & Sweet!

This course will discuss the short story form and how to best support our own written claims using textual evidence found in these short, but mighty, pieces of literature.

3D Game Design with Unity Game Engine

In this Game Development class we introduce the Unity3D game engine - a powerful yet easy-to-learn tool used widely in the gaming industry to create fun and fantastic games! After learning how to use the engine’s interface, we begin building games using a visual scripting language to cover Computer Science concepts and Game Development basics.

 

 

Later they use Game Design theory and principles. Students will solidify their technical foundation whilst learning about level design, difficulty balance, how to design fun in a game.

Robotics League Challenges

In this exciting Robotics class you get to build and program awesome EV3 Robots and challenge other teams. We use challenges that prepare you for competition or just for simple fun. To be the winner in a challenge you may need to use critical thinking and apply it to the design and coding process. You may need to tinker with your creation and work collaboratively with your team to solve problems and debug a program. Come and be a Robotics Designer and Engineer for the day. No experience necessary just a desire to build something cool and have some fun.

Reading Comprehension 101

Reading Comprehension 101

This skills - based course is designed to introduce and reinforce reading comprehension skills for both fiction and non-fiction texts. Students will be given a variety of strategies to help deepen their understanding of texts from all content areas, organize their thoughts while they read, and apply their new knowledge from texts when responding to multi level comprehension questions.

 


Video Game Programming with Python

  • Two Week Session: July 2 - July 13, 2018
  • Time: 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

In this fun STEAM class we explore the power of the Python Programming language. The students use Algebraic Operations with Computer Science and write programs that automatically round numbers, compute roots/squares/factorials, and draw colorful geometric shapes based on user input. Later they create simple programs to understand how to draw moving graphics, and of course create video games.

One WEEK SESSIONS

Drone Mission Mania

  • One Week Session: June 11 - June 25 2018
  • Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Drone Mission Mania will be presented by Drobots- http://drobotscompany.com/

 

Campers will learn the basics of drone technology and safety before taking to the air to fly and code the drones through an abundance of missions. Throughout the week, Instructors will pose various challenges that the campers must solve using drones. Missions include: Connect 4, Drone Basketball, King Kong, International Space Station Drone Docking, Harry The Hiker, and more. Students work all week long to prepare for the most enjoyable part of the week: the Ultimate Drone Games where students collaborate, strategize, and create their own drone missions and then compete against one another. Participants will use the SWIFT programming language to accomplish many of these missions.

Drone Racing & Obstacle Course Challenge

  • One Week Session: June 25 - June 29 2018

Drone Racing & Obstacle Course Challenge will be presented by Drobots- http://drobotscompany.com/

This program is filled with pure action as students enjoy one of the world’s fastest growing sports, Drone Racing. Campers will first learn about the basic safety of drone flying and the history behind drone racing as a sport. From there, campers will progress through various skill challenges and learn how to perform various exercises and maneuvers to become familiar with the drone’s speed and agility. Flight squads post up against one another in friendly competition when they race themselves and the clock. Students will first maneuver the drone through creative obstacle courses before taking on the challenge of flying for speed. Participants contribute fully in this program as they create the design and help build the the obstacle course in preparation for the last day’s final activities and competition.

Want to participate in a Drobots’ overnight FPV racing (first person view) camp? Students in 7th to 11th grades put on the flight googles and fly drones similar to the racing you have seen on ESPN and YouTube.
