Indigenous Peoples' Day - At With Mystic Seaport Museum

*The event has already taken place on this date: Mon, 10/14/2024
Are you looking for a way to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day on October 14? Plan a meaningful day at Mystic Seaport Museum! First, explore the major exhibition "Entwined: Freedom, Sovereignty, and the Sea", which centers maritime histories in Indigenous, African, and African-descended worldviews and experiences. Unraveling the threads of existing maritime narratives for the history of the Dawnland (New England), Indigenous dispossession, and racialized slavery, this exhibition is rooted in voices and histories that have been silent or silenced. Entwined explores the enduring legacies, strength, and resilience of Sovereign Indigenous Nations and African-descended peoples of the Dawnland.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.
While you are visiting Entwined, sign up for a special guided tour of the companion exhibit, "Restor(y)ing Indigenous Collections" in the Collections Research Center. Through historical and contemporary works, the exhibit showcases how Indigenous artists have always wielded their environmental knowledge, long-standing symbolic practices, and skills to create baskets holding important stories of Native land-protection, resistance to colonial policies, and the maintenance of knowledge systems. Tours will take place at 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
Next, stop by the Buckingham-Hall House between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to learn about Indigenous cooking, shared over an open hearth by Tomaquag Museum Educator, Chrystal Baker (Narragansett).
Before you end your day, stop into the Museum’s Print Shop along the waterfront to take home a special Indigenous Peoples' Day handcrafted print!
All activities are included in admission; tours of Restor(y)ing Indigenous Collections require registration in the Entwined exhibition, which is located in the Stillman Building.
