Fairfield Chabad Launches Joyous Purim Season With Family Hamantash Bake
Community Welcomed to a Hands-On Celebration of Jewish Tradition
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Chabad of Fairfield will be launching the joyous Purim holiday season as they host a family-friendly pre-Purim Hamantash Bake on Sunday February 26, from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Chabad of Fairfield. The hamantash is a three-cornered filled pastry that is a traditional treat enjoyed on Purim — this year March 6-7 — and participants at Chabad of Fairfield’s event will make the dough from scratch, shape, pinch and fill the hamantaschen in a joyous, hands-on celebration of Jewish life and observance.
Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot. The hamantash, named after Haman, is a traditional holiday pastry with various fillings such as chocolate, fruit jam, or poppy seeds.
“The hamantash is a tangible — and tasty — reminder of thousands of years of Jewish tradition,” said Miriam Landa, who is the Educational Director at Chabad of Fairfield. “Our Purim celebration is a reminder to all of us to joyously celebrate our heritage and to gather proudly as Jews.”
The event is a family-friendly and community-wide program, and all are welcome to join, regardless of Jewish affiliation or background. The Hamantash Bake is $10 per person or $36 for a family. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay. RSVP (required) at JewishFairfield.org/Hamentash.
"The Purim season is a time to celebrate as a community, to gather together — adults and children — to celebrate the story of our survival as a people in the face of overwhelming odds," said Landa. "What greater joy can there be than that of being able to live proudly and freely as a Jew!"

What is the holiday of Purim?
The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. It begins this year at sundown on March 6 and ends at nightfall on March 7. The holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in Ancient Persia from Haman's plot.
Today, Purim is a joyous celebration of Jewish unity and triumph in the face of hatred and persecution. It is observed by public readings of the Megillah, or Scroll of Esther, to recount the story of the Purim miracle, sending food gifts to friends, giving gifts of money to the poor and enjoying a festive Purim meal.
