SENSORY FRIENDLY- Ballet Theatre's Nutcracker at The Bushnell Center

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 11/27/2022
Ballet Theater Company is thrilled to return to The Bushnell with a refreshed version of a beloved holiday classic. In an effort to address the lingering cultural appropriation in the 130-year-old ballet, Dattellas has reimagined a new, vibrant, and cheeky Act II featuring magical treat-foods that would wow a 19th-Century young lady in a dreamscape and will delight modern audiences. To make the vision come to life for audiences, Lead Costume Designer Pat Nurnberger will design and hand-sew over seventy costumes to pair with Dattellas’ fresh, original choreography. BTC is ecstatic to welcome Lauren Lovette, former principal with the NYCB as she returns to perform for a second year as the dazzling Sugar Plum Fairy. Audiences can look forward to fresh production designs including a decadent Mother Ginger and three-dimensional, immersive projection. World renowned guest dancers (to be announced soon!) will join BTC’s newly established company artists in residence and local student dancers to perform the starring roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier.

About Sensory-Friendly Performances at The Bushnell

Sensory-friendly performances are designed to create a performing arts experience that is welcoming to all families and friends with children or adults on the autism spectrum or with other sensitivity issues.

Slight adjustments to the production are made and accommodations for these performances will include:

• Lower sound level, especially for startling or loud sounds;
• Lights remain on at a low level in the theater during the performance;
• A reduction of strobe lighting or lighting focused on the audience;
• Patrons are free to talk and leave their seats during the performance;
• Patrons are allowed to bring in outside food and drinks into the theater;
• Designated quiet areas within the theater lobby spaces, staffed with autism specialists;
• Space throughout the theater for standing and movement;
• Limited crowds and visitors at The Bushnell during the day and timing of the performance; and
• Bushnell staff and volunteers are trained to be inviting and accommodating to families' needs.
