The Breeding Bird Survey began in 1966. It is jointly coordinated by USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the Mexican National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity. Over 2500 birders participate and collect data on over 500 bird species. This data is an important conservation tool used by Westmoreland Sanctuary, the Audubon Society, and countless other organizations.
