"Jonah and the Whale" live performance Dec 5 at 10AM worship service

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 12/05/2021
The Children's Choir of the UU church in Westport will be performing the musical "Jonah and the Whale" as the main part of the worship service Sunday, Dec. 5 at 10 AM. All are welcome for this wonderful, fun retelling of a religious classic from the Bible's Old Testament. The music, costumes, props (yes, there's a whale!) and scripts are entertaining and compelling.

The Children's Choir of the Unitarian Church in Westport is pleased to present Allen Pote and Carol McMann's musical, Jonah and the Whale, as part of the worship service next Sunday, December 5, at 10 AM. When the musical concludes, there will be a chance to ask the young cast questions, so we can bring the story into our lives and see how it relates to our time and circumstances.

Some Biblical stories are so large, so important that they have been referenced in many literary and dramatic works. It’s important for our children to know what those stories are and why they have withstood the test of time. The Jonah story is rich in meaning: some of its themes include self- worth, dignity, narcissism and the undisciplined mind, the importance of community, and responsibility.

The central character, Jonah, has a lot happening in his life: storms, ill-fated boat rides, living inside a whale, experiencing loneliness, encountering the nasty Ninevites, listening to his angels.  In the end Jonah faces his deepest fears and reforms the Ninevites in the process. One will hear a lot of songs from all quarters.

Come to see and hear how Jonah copes with it all.  Meet the whale, the sailors, the Ninevites and hear what the angels have to say.   Smaller children are invited to sit in the front rows or on the floor in order to see the action.

The Children's Choir has been working on this for several months.  They will be wearing masks and we ask our attendees to as well.
