DECEMBER ASTRONOMY - WINTER SOLSTICE at The Discovery Center at Ridgefield

Seven days after the new moon is the first quarter moon. It is 50% illuminated and appears directly overhead at sunset. It occurs when the moon is one quarter of the way through its orbit around the earth, hence its name! It is a one day event and in the days that follow it enters a Waxing Gibbous phase, growing into a full moon on December 22.

At 6:00PM, there will be an optional mini-lesson for participants, especially children, to better understand what they will be viewing. This will take place in the classroom and is included in the price of the program. Viewing will begin on Astronomy Hill at 630PM.

What to bring: Please dress for the weather. Bring a flashlight, as the walk to/from the observatory is dark. If you have them, lawn chairs and binoculars are welcome, insect repellent is recommended. For those with smartphones, there is a possibility that photos off the telescopes can be taken during the program.
