JUNETEENTH RECOGNITION EVENTS - Mystic Seaport Museum

*The event has already taken place on this date: Mon, 06/19/2023
On Sunday, June 11, Mystic Seaport Museum and Discovering Amistad are collaborating for the fourth year to bring a Juneteenth recognition event to the grounds of the Museum. A special program – including a keynote lecture, live music, artisan vendors, and tours of the 128-foot flagship of Connecticut, the Amistad – is designed to honor African-American culture, to increase awareness and to highlight the roles that we all can play to dismantle racism. The program begins at 3:00. Admission to Mystic Seaport Museum is free after 2:30 on June 11. On June 19, Juneteenth, join us at the Performance Stage at 2:00 pm for the one-woman show “Harriet Tubman: Woman with a Railroad.” Written and performed by Adwoa Bandele-Asante, this show is arguably the best post-Civil War portrayal of Harriet Tubman to date. Through the story of Harriet Tubman’s struggle for freedom from slavery and inclusion as an American citizen, Bandele-Asante demonstrates how faith, courage, and commitment inspired this great woman warrior, healer, and builder of the twentieth century. Adwoa Bandele-Asante was born and raised in New London, CT. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College and a Master of Arts degree from Howard University in Washington, DC. Bandele-Asante taught high school and founded the Back to Africa Club which enabled her to travel to West Africa. While in DC she debuted “Harriet Tubman: Woman with a Railroad” at highly acclaimed director Haile Gerima’s Sankofa Books and Videos Cafe. Today she is founder and managing member of P.E.A.C.E. Works Group LLC.
